marimba lumina visualization

A still from the performance

I recently worked with Jules Espinau on a demo involving the visualization of the marimba lumina, a MIDI-based gestural controller. Because MIDI isn’t the dominant protocol at CNMAT, the goal was to create wrappers around both the MIDI input of the Marimba Lumina and my video patch that needed to accept generic input.

I found it quite easy to be able to create generic input from OSC packets so that all Jules and I had to do was agree on a given name-space and pass it back and forth between computers via wireless peer-to-peer. This method of working proved not only to be time-efficient but allowed for more focus of the details of the creative process. And of course, if one computer goes down, the other is still sitting there ready to transmit the same i/o it previously was.

I would like to develop this piece further in the future; I’ll see what Jules thinks of that.
We were able to create the details of our work in private and finesse the details of how gestures would translate across this name-space in a single session. I think it took us all of a single day to get the OSC-communication up and running in order to work with the setup as a live performance instrument.

mullif

Monday, August 17th, 2009

mullif is flap-filled and furry.
he lets the stash take it’s course after a long day, and enjoys quiet nights in the park (alone).

due to the rather inconvenient glob of intestines stapled to his forehead, he keeps his mouth open in the event that “some might slip down”, as he has no arms to catch slippage.

RBFJGS80 cover + album art

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

RBFJGS80‘s new record, “i am a gorgeous wife”, is out.
You can listen to and buy the album here.

I worked on the art and layout. I’m including pix, below.
Eric Carlson made the artwork for the back cover, and sits along with some additions I put in to integrate it with the rest of the panels.
Vern on type.

Thanks for GVB for offering the opportunity, and making great music.
Thanks also to the entire 80 band, all of which are exceptional in their musicianship.

alubow dot com

The first rev of the new alubow site is complete.
Look for it to go live later this week.

For those of you who aren’t aware, my sister is an incredibly talented Photographer living in Brooklyn. Her focus is to shoot fine-art photos for fashion magazines.

Allyson has printed for artists from David LaChappelle to Hugo Tillman, photographed for magazines from TapeOp to Bust, and is currently printing for Eileen Quinlan and Robert Blake. She has become a permanent fixture at Pochron Studios in Brooklyn, and continues to shoot on a freelance basis for various clients.

Many thanks to Allyson for staying patient during this work and for clear communication on what she was looking for…

and MANY MANY thanks to Gabriel Dunne for all of his amazingly detailed input regarding the dark corners of Flash, server-side scripting, and integration between browsers and Flex. I’m always surprised just how many devils can be found in the details. Also, thanks to Ryan Alexander for offering great advice on a number of occasions. It’s wonderful to have a supportive community around me.
